I was so excited to check out the recently opened, Southern Proper, this weekend. It's a wonderful Southern restaurant that opened up last week in the South End serving all the Southern eats you could want — fried chicken, biscuits, hushpuppies, potato salad, catfish, grits, and so much more. I have been eagerly awaiting their opening since I heard about a few months ago (we don’t have much Southern food in Boston!).
When I visited with my friend this weekend, we started with some cocktails and a few snacks — their charred okra, deviled eggs, pimento cheese popovers, and their silver queen hushpuppies.
Initially, we couldn’t decide between the popovers and hushpuppies, so we just decided to get both. And I’m so glad! Both dishes were heavenly, and I especially loved the hushpuppies, which were so warm and crispy and lathered with salted butter.
Then, a dish of roasted flounder and some of Southern Proper’s delicious fried chicken, paired with a corn waffle and some corn on the cob.
The fried chicken was perfect, and pairing it with the warm corn waffle, glazed in maple syrup was a great addition.
As if that wasn’t enough, two slices of delicious pie — Pecan and Lemon Meringue, to end the night.
It was a perfect way to enjoy a stormy Friday night — warm southern food, a beautiful and welcoming space, and great music.
Check out Southern Proper’s full menu here. They’re located at 600 Harrison Ave in the South End.
